Daily Stock Picks Newsletter from October 20th, 2008

There still should be a little fear in the stock market so I am expecting a smaller pullback in the first hour or so Monday morning than what we have been seeing this last week.  The S&P futures are slightly positive but that doesn’t mean too much at this point.  The stock market will be looking for a bottom and it is likely we will see a slightly negative bias through Monday and into Tuesday morning before making substantial gains.  Yet any positive news could trigger a buying binge with a lot of money on the sidelines in mutual funds, pension managers, foreign investors and the retail investors.

If the indices like the Dow 30, NASDAQ Composite, S&P 500 make lower lows this week, then the market would really be in trouble from a technical point of view.

Some news headlines tonight are that ING, an insurance company, is getting financial support from the Dutch government, South Korean is backing the banks with $100 billion, and Japanese steelmakers expected to raise forecasts.  These types of headlines are eventually going to be viewed positively after the immediate fear and panic is washed out of the minds of investors and stability starts returning in all the financial markets.

The strongest sector has been the oil and gas stocks the last few days-NBL, APA, EOG, COG, XTO, GDP, GMXR, APC, CRK, DVN and many others but the charts look like a couple down days are in order.  This type of strength tends to indicate more strength is due in the near term. An overall thought to oil is that it is extremely unlikely that spot oil prices drop 54% from $147+ per barrel to $69 without having some sort of substantial rebound.  The next couple of days are good opportunities to build intermediate long positions in oil and gas stocks that may last for several months in an uptrend.

The tech stocks have also been relatively strong as well and look like they are trying to build a bottom this week.  AAPL, IBM, RIMM, GOOG, and BIDU are good candidates for moving higher.

In general, it really is not a good idea to be short stocks now for swing trades.  Any day, stocks could start moving up sharply during the day as well as overnight positions.

It looks like the ag-chemical stocks are trying to bottom but may need more time to stabilize without making new low (MON, MOS, AGU, POT) but this sector will be another excellent position for several months as well as the energy and technology stocks.

Look at PEP, Pepsi-Cola chart and this is an excellent investment idea.  It also has a small dividend of $1.70 per share which is a 3.2% yield.  This could easily move up 20% in the coming several months.

PRU, Prudential Insurance looks like it is getting close to buy long as an intermediate term position.  This sector still may have a little more bad news this week but look to buy this on in the high 30’s.

Have a great day and I’ll talk to you tomorrow.
